Across Te Waipounamu and Wharekauri/Rēkohu, Whānau Ora Kaitūwhana service providers are doing vital work walking alongside whānau through some of life’s most complex moments.

Underpinning that work is an equally critical need to make sure the systems and processes that track and report on that mahi are fit for purpose.

Te Tauraki is responding to that with the Whānau Ora Data Capability Uplift Funding Agreement. Through this, Te Tauraki is providing one-off funding to eligible service providers to strengthen their internal data capability.

This not as a compliance exercise, but a genuine investment in the quality and sustainability of whānau-centred services. It reflects a growing recognition across the sector that capability gaps in data management can undermine even the most well-resourced programmes. Accurate, timely reporting is the connective tissue between on-the-ground delivery and informed decision-making at every level of the system.

The process is practical and provider led. Organisations begin with a data capability self-assessment, establishing a baseline view across data processes, storage and security, reporting, Māori Data Sovereignty, and workforce knowledge. There are no wrong answers, only starting points.

From there, each provider develops a focused Action Plan, identifying priority areas and how funding will be applied, whether it is to training, CRM system reviews, equipment, or appointing a dedicated data champion.

Our Business Analyst and Workforce Development Lead will work directly with providers throughout.

This is a lightweight, trust-based funding mechanism that supports internal uplift without creating reporting burdens or displacing existing funding streams. Within six months, providers confirm how the pūtea was used to demonstrate alignment

Ultimately, the Data Capability Uplift is about ensuring the infrastructure behind whānau care is as strong as the relationships at its heart, and that the insights generated by providers can meaningfully inform the wider system that supports them.
