Te Tauraki is the single Iwi-Māori Partnership Board for the Ngāi Tahu Takiwā.
At section 6 of the Ngāi Tahu Claims Settlement Act 1998, the Crown acknowledges that Ngāi Tahu is ‘the tangata whenua of, and as holding rangatiratanga within, the Takiwā of Ngāi Tahu Whānui’. The boundaries of the Ngāi Tahu tribal Takiwā are statutorily defined in section 5 of Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu Act 1996.
This map indicates the Ngāi Tahu Takiwā and shows the area of Te Waipounamu covered by Te Tauraki as an Iwi-Māori Partnership Board, as stated in Schedule 4 of the Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) Act 2022.
